Iam looking for information about John Jones , who was a chief boatman, coastguard 1819at Kinsdale, also at Ringabelle, Ballymacotter, Knockadoon,Sothampton in 1829. He lived in Clovelly where he died in 1844. Ibelieve he was born in 1789 but I do not know where. I shall be gratefull if anyone has any information-Jones |

Hi, and welcome to the Forum. I'm afraid I cannot advance your knowledge very far, but I did notice that his posting to Kinsale was made from Clovelly. Looking at ADM 175/1 pdf 99 I see that this posting was as a result of him being promoted from Commissioned Boatman to Chief Boatman, regrettably there are no earlier records. However, if you say that he returned to Clovelly on his retirement I would guess that he was a local man. Martin |

Dear Martin, thank you for replying to my request for information on John Jones. I have a copy of the 1841 census which states that a John Jones was a coastguard at Ilfracombe. In the section for 'whether born in same county' a N has been entered. The record office informed me that this indicates that he was not born in North Devon. I do not claim to know anything about coastguards but I did find it strange that he had several postings near to each other in Ireland at such a troubled time in history. I have tried in vain to trace Clovelly records. I am aware that the Manor estate had two major fires Again thankyou----Jones |
