Loss of life in Irish shipwrecks
Loss of life in Irish shipwrecks
Edward J Bourke
This data is summarised from from Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast by Edward J Bourke. The loss of life in Irish shipwrecks is often concealed when the wreck occurred offshore. The coastguard is the main source of reports of shipwrecks recorded in Lloyds list - the twice weekly shipping newspaper. Intriguingly the Lloyds agent at Tramore recorded some 130 wrecks but only half of them are in the List. Perhaps they were not mentioned if they were not insured - this after all was the main purpose of the shipping information.
