In investigating my family tree I have found this very interesting site, the following is my knowledge of my family and if anyone has any other information which may give me more details I would be very pleased. Charles Greer (boatman) born 1826 in Scotland married to Frances Stark Children Emily born 1870 Portnoo Hannah born 1868 Malinmore Thomas Benjamin born 1865 Malinmore Charles J Greer born 1856 possibly in Scotland also became a coastguard in Ireland, married Frances ? Children Ida born 1888 in Ireland Thomas born 1889 Tralee Ireland Gertrude born 1892 Ireland Lily born 1894 Ireland Jessie born 1896 Ireland He is on the 1901 census as living in Portsmouth Hampshire and is listed as a retired coastguard which seems to be fairly young at about 45. Hi Colin, and welcome to the Forum You need to visit the National Archives online database for Seamans Records held in the ADM 188 series (e.g.from 1872). I believe you will find the service record of Charles James Greer there. To make life a little easier I am including the link to the search results for Charles Greer. For £3.50 you can down load his record. Hi Colin I came across a reference to a Charles Greer, CG Man, on the Baltic Medal Roll for HMS Cressy. He was recruited from Leith CG Station in 1854, and his medal was sent there in 1857. From the information you have provided previously there is a good chance this is your man. Regards Martin |

Thanks for the information,, if correct he could not have been on it long as his son was born September the following year. Is there any other information on this you can give me or is there anything on line which I can check into further. Thanks again Colin |

Hi Colin HMS Cressy saw service in the Baltic in both 1854 and 1855. Because the Baltic ports were frozen-in during the winter months, the Baltic fleet returned to England to over-winter in 1854 before returning in 1855 once the ice had cleared. Unlike Nelson’s navy, the majority of men were volunteers, and while it was true that some men still deserted, annual leave was granted. It is therefore feasible that Greer could have returned home in the winter of 1854, which would fit nicely with the birth of his son in September. Unfortunately you cannot confirm the ships movements online, consulting the Ship’s Log in the ADM 53 series of records at the NA could only do this; I’m also not sure if his absence from the ship would be recorded in the Muster Rolls in ADM 38, I’ve never tried looking for a man on leave. Colin I am related to the Greers who lived in Portsmouth. The ladies you mention were my Aunts who I remember as a youngster. I dont have the full relationship with me here at work but will seek it out in the next couple of days and get back to you |
