Michael Connolly started his Naval Career (to my knowledge) serving under his father, Thomas Connolly on the Valiant. He then joined the Navy. A transcript of his career is below. It seems to have included time in India and Australia. I have a few questions: 1, His tatoo/s. Does the record mean he had a tatoo of a ring or that he actually wore a ring? 2. Is there a way to work out when he would have had leave? Would his wife have travelled with him, remained in Galway or lived on a navy base? 3. He seems to have been invalided to Plymouth Hospital and then received his pension at Yarmouth Hospital if I am reading the end of the second page of his record correctly. I saw some reference to Yarmouth hospital being used for psychiatric cases at this time. Is there a way to find out more about what happened? There seems to be some writing on the actual record which is very faint and unreadable. I have enclosed an attachment of the file. In answer to your questions: 1: This would be a tattooed ring. 2: His wife is most probably still living in Galway. At this time no women accompanied their husbands on RN vessels. You would only be able to establish periods of leave by referring to each ship's muster book. 3: His record has the letters DD which is navy shorthand for discharged dead. I have looked at the BDM index and there is a Michael Connolly who died in Yarmouth in the Jan-Mar qtr of 1898 so it's a very good chance this is him - ref Yarmouth Dist, 1898, Vol 4b, page 3. You might not have picked up that he was awarded the 1882 Egypt Medal and Khedive's Star for his service on HMS Agincourt, according to the roll these were returned on his death. Martin |

I'm sorry for the delay in thanking you Martin but I have only just seen your message. I know that Michael is still alive on 25 June 1896 as he is mentioned in his father's will which is written on this date so this Yarmouth death may be correct. I will have to save up to get a copy of the cert or birth entry as I think these are quite expensive in England. I have just been looking at the Ballyheige parish register and cannot see Michael's baptism entry so I will have to go back to his father's service record and check if Thomas was in Ballyheige at the time or Achill, Aran or Tullymore. I have had problems finding the births for Thomas's children or the name of his wife due too the time period being before civil registration. How do I find the ships muster books please? Are they online? When you say the medals were returned, do you mean they were returned to the damily or returned by the hospital to the Navy? Why would the medals have been returned? Would this indicate that his wife was dead? Or that there was no one living in the home place in Galway at this time (his brother John who lived there was a Customs Officer in Liverpool and I do not know when he returned to Galway as he was a single man who seems to have left little trail until the 1901 census)? Thank you once again for your help. Merged on 29/01/2016 10:02:56: I have just found a burial for Connolly Michael Petty Officer 1st Class RN 13-01-189 age 38 at the new cemetary at Great Yarmouth Minster (St Nicholas) http://s3.spanglefish.com/s/21984/documents/rnh-new-cemetery-alphabetical-order.pdf This confirms the information of the date of death shown on the ADM file. Birth Certificates are not to expensive (around £9.50) if you purchase them direct from the GRO. For the Muster Books you would need to search the National Archives catalogue using the ship's name, minus the HMS prefix, and the years to narrow the search. Unfortunately these are not available online, meaning you would have to go to the NA at Kew in person. Re the medals, I would assume they were returned to the Admiralty because the Navy did not have a current address for the next of kin. Martin |
