This is a photo taken of John in his younger years, my 3times Great Grandfather, who lived in Greenock Renfrewshire Scotland. At 14 yrs of age he entered as a Mariner in 1843 on the Harriet RC & Hawk RC &Wellington RC, all stationed in Stranaer, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He served on many ships as well as the Royal George & received the Baltic medal in Ballycastle Ireland in 1857 & served 6 years there. Then in 1862 he was transferred to Cushendon, Coleraine, Ireland as Commissioned Boatman. He became Chief Boatman in Charge in 1874 then Chief Officer of Coastguard stationed in Sutton, Castletown,Kilmicheal, Ireland. He retired in August of 1885 with 42 years in the Royal Navy.He was 57 years old. He returned to his Native land in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland & passed away on May 23, 1906 at 78 years of age.
