Timothy O'Neill
mcshere
I would appreciate some help in tying up some loose ends in my wife's family tree. I need birth details for Timothy O'Neill, to establish his parentage. I know he was born in Cork, around 1870, and appears to have served as a Coastguard in Mayo (1901), Donegal(1907) and Pigeonhouse, Dublin(1911).

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Thanks

Eamonn welcome to the Forum.

He will have a naval service record, this won't contain any family details but should provide a date and place of birth, which may assist you in finding his parents. Doing a search of these records returns a likely candidate born Tracton, Cork, 7 April 1869. Below is a link to the search for all men of his name, to confirm you have the right man will mean spending £3.36.

Thanks Martin - I think that's him. Your link also showed his son Timothy, J52108, born in Mayo. I should be able to trace Senior's birth/baptism cert from the reference to Tracton.

If this is your man then he might have re-entered the navy during WW1, because he is on the medal roll for the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals.

Thanks again - you were spot on! I've downloaded his record from NA, and it is him - his postings correspond to the family locations for the births and census info which I have. He served on 2 ships and 2 shore-based establishments during WW1, hence the medals.
His date of birth is given as 7 April 1869, in Tracton, Cork, but I cannot find any corresponding birth certs. On his marriage cert to Emily Browne (1896), he gives his father's names as Daniel but this hasn't helped either. He gave his profession as "man of war" - is this naval terminology of the time?

'Man of War' was used to describe a warship more so during the period of the Napoleonic Wars.

You mention his father's name from the marriage certificate, but not his occupation. I ask because there was a Daniel, who variously appears in the CG records as O'Neal, O'Neil and O'Neill, who retired from the CG Service in 1862. Unfortunately his last posting was Wicklow, I had hoped it would be Robert's Cove which is only down the road from Tracton.

Thanks for all the help with this - at 07:00 this morning! I really appreciate it.
I thought his father may have been "in the trade", and had found Daniel. I had discounted him, more on the grounds of age, as Timothy was born 1869. However I'll have another look, as he is on the marriage cert as a labourer, but is deceased by 1896. I will get whatever records are available from NA for Daniel, check his age and see if he retired early.

Hi Martin,
I think I've traced Timothy's parents.Smile
Changing my search to Timothy Neill, I found a baptismal cert for Timothy, born to Daniel Neill and Ellen Crowley in Ballyfeard (Oct 1868) - and Ballyfeard is in the parish of Tracton. There may well be a Coastguard link between father and son, but I can't prove it. The difference in the birth date on his record (7 April 1869) and the October 1868 date was explained to me by Ger in the South Mayo Genealogy Centre (re: another relative who was baptised before they were born!). Apparently in those days they were quick to baptise, but slow to register. If they were late registering, there was a fine, so the parents would register the child as born on a later date.
