Hello my query is about a boatman naed Peter Pay, stationed at Kilmichael 1833 - 1836 (he died c.June 1836). Date of death is from service record but no details stated. I've already ascertained that his burial is not recorded due to loss of Arklow records in a fire in 1922, so what I'm asking is whether anyone knows of any records where his cause of death may be recorded. Just want to know whether it was a maritime-related incident rather than illness (he was 46) and whether there is a report anywhere. Also, would anyone have any idea what would have happened to his family in the immediate aftermath of his death in 1836? They turn up back in Devon by 1841, living in Torquay next door to another coastguard who had also served in Ireland - which may be significant. Just wondering what happened to them in Ireland prior to their return to Devon. Would the Service have assisted their passage home, left them to their own means? Does anyone know where they might have been living at that date (presumably Kilmichael coastguard cottages date from much later) ? Any ideas / assistance very much appreciated. Thanks - Michael |
