 Life Jacket - Merchant Marine

I was given a life jacket that was among some of the items my great grandfather had kept from his time in the British Merchant Marine. He served until the 1950's. I was wondering if anyone could share any light on any details as to the period this jacket is from, if its specific to merchant ships, etc. The only markings on it are "HARRISON & JONES Ltd LIVERPOOL 5 - PURAX" ???
