I'm hoping someone can help me with more information about Alfred Norman. My understanding is that he was a Waterguard at Burtonport, Donegal, eg: Freeman’s Journal 1823/10/23/ FORSTER Nassau Esq At Rutland, Capt Alfred NORMAN, RN, Inspecting Commander of the Preventive Water Guard stationed in the co Donegal to Miss FORSTER daughter of Nassau FORSTER Esq a magistrate of that county However, I have looked through ADM 175/99 and can find no record of him. He was drowned attending a wreck in Jan 1825 and I would like to know more about his record and that incident - but I have fallen at the first hurdle not even finding his name in the index! Thanks very much for any help Jo |

Welcome to the Forum Jo. Alfred Norman passed for a Lieut. on 17 Feb 1815, and was subsequently nominated to the Waterguard on 8 Feb 1820, with a first posting to Knock-a-Down on 16 March 1820 (ADM 175/74 pdf 20 & 21). At the time of his appointment he was living in Longport, Somerton. With the end of the Napoleonic Wars many naval officers had to take other work or remain on half pay, and the PWG was an obvious choice. He was subsequently moved to Long Island (ADM 175/1 pdf 234 and 250), from where he resigned on 26 March 1820. I have not found any evidence that he re-entered the service, but I will keep looking. That's terrific - all new information to me. Thank you so much! It seems a bit strange that he resigned so quickly... After I posted the message last night I was having another look at ADM 175/99 and came across the record of Francis Forster (possibly Alfred's wife's brother). It looks as though Lieut Norman was his inspecting commander. Here is the transcription I made. ADM/99 PDF page 38 Forster Mr Francis , Chf Off (rank), Rutland (residence), 23 Sept 1823 (date of nomination) 6 Oct 1823 (date of probation letter in Ireland), Dawus (to what station ordered) Report of qualification 20 Nov 1823, Lieut Norman (name of inspecting commander) 24 (age of party) Letter Kenny (where born), S (married or single), App 20th Oct 1823 (remarks) Does that look to you as though he did re-enter the service? Many thanks again for such a quick response Jo |

I'm sorry Jo but I've had no luck with Alfred, although I have to agree that it looks as if he did re-enter the service. In later CG records Inspecting Commanders are listed with their Districts, but these lists do not appear to exist for the earlier records. If you could get to the National Archives, Kew, it might be worth checking the Customs Records and the Navy Lists for 1815 to 1825 to see if these throw any light on Alfreds career. Finally, I may be completely off track here, but there was an Alfred Norman, born Donegal. 1824, whose mother was Grace Mary Norman, born Wicklow (widow) who married a Francis (Fanny) Penniman Boxer, daughter of Commander William Boxer RN, who himself was Inspecting Commander of the Donegal CG District - too many coincidences to my mind. You're absolutely right - that Alfred Norman was this Alfred Norman's son. We assume that the Normans and Boxers came into contact through the Waterguard link and that the family links continued into the next generation. Thanks for the tip re Kew. It is on my list of things to do and as you say I might get a bit further that way. Appreciate your help very much Jo |
