Duration of service
My forebear was one of the original officers in the Five Mile Point Station, Co Wicklow which was established in 1822. His name was Patrick Flood and he hailed from Baldoyle in Co Dublin. He married a local girl from Kinsealy Co Dublin, and they two of their first children born in Co Wicklow. Subsequently he worked in various stations on the south coast of England and ended up living out his retirement in Kent. I would like to know how long was the length of service in each station. Also was it a definite pattern for Irish personnel to serve in Britain and vice versa? I can find no record for the family for one of the census years, I think 1861. Would it have been likely for them to have returned to Ireland to work at this stage? What would have been the retirement age for officers. My forebear would have been 63 in 1861. Are there any employment records surviving for personnel?
