Hello and firstly thankyou for allowing me to register on this site. I have been researching my paternal family line and have discovered my Great Great Grandfather was a Coastguard Boatsman from I believe 1879. I have tried looking at records held by National Archive but to date haven't found a trace of him. Here are some facts; Frederick Birt b. 7th July 1851 in Birmingham Joined Royal Navy in 1869 applied to be coastguard boatman 1879 His Navy record has him serving on HMS Belliesle at the follwing locations 1878 Union Hall (record has him living in Union Hall Coastguard Flat) 1880 - 1883 Castletownend (listed as Boatman) 1883 - 1889 Crookhaven ( listed as Chief Boatman) 1890 - 1899 Baltimore (Chief Boatman in charge) 1899 - 1900 Ballycroneen (Chief Boatman) Then there is something on his record that looks like "Kecohaven - Warsash" which I can't decipher. He according to his record was pensioned in July 1900. If anyone can point me in the right direction of where he might be recorded I would be eternally grateful. It must have been a hard life as 6 months later he passed away in Portsmouth leaving a widow and 9 children behind.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum. For the period you are interested in the best source of information are the RN service records that you have already found. However, there are two CG specific records that have Birt's service shown, these are ADM 175/44 pdf 372 & ADM 175/45 pdf 399. Regards Martin |
