Franics Ellis Bn 1801 Mullaghmore, Co Sligo is my 4 x great grandfather. I know that he was stationed at Fort Moncrieff, Kent in 1841 & 1851 from the census. He had a son Francis Ellis Bn 1840, Hearne Bay, Kent who went on to become the Chief Coastguard at Filey, Yorkshire in 1891. Another son Robert Bn1837 in Ireland was, according to the 1891 census, the Chief Coastguard at Cromer. Robert had a son Francis Bn 1880 at Blackrock Ireland. If anyone has any more information on this family or know if there is a connection to the picture in the photo gallery of Francis Ellis I would be very pleased to here from you. Francis Ellis Bn 1801 also had a daughter Ann who married by 3 x great grandfather Emerson Heron Smith who was also a Coastguard stationed at Dymchurch, Kent as well as serving on HMS Donegal. Thank you. |

Hi, and welcome to the Forum. Using the ADM 175 CG Establishment Books I've traced Francis Ellis Snr. CG career. He joined the establishment in May 1829, having previously worked as an Extra Man in the Sligo District (ADM 175/18 pdf 268),with a first posting to Inniscrone. On 1 July 1839 he was transferred to Cadmus CG Station in England; from here he moved to Herne Bay on 30 April 1840 (ADM 175/6 pdf 77), and then on 23 December 1840 to Ft Moncrieff. On 21 December 1852 he was removed to the Grand Redoubt, from where he was discharged on 1 June 1853 on an allowance of £29/10- (ADM 175/7 pdf 160. For the careers of Francis Jnr and Robert your best bet is to download their service records from the National Archives website. Turning to Em(m)erson he was nominated to the CG Service on 30 May 1857 from HMS Winchester , which had just returned from China where she took part in the 2nd China War, for which he was awarded a no-clasp medal. His first posting was to Littlestone and then on 2 Dec 1857 to Tower 24. I have not done so, but it would be possible to continue to trace his career in the CG Service - let me know if you would like me to do this. For his prior service, again there is a service record for him on the NA website. However, he appears to have left the CG sometime prior to 1873, because there is no ADM 188 service record for him. Regards Martin |

HI Martin, Thank you very much for this information it's really interesting. I haven't searched the National Archive yet, I'm in the process of reading up an how to so - I'm going to give it a go but might come back to you if I get stuck! I have discovered through a birth certificate that Emerson Heron was serving on HMS Donegal in 1865. The world of naval/coastguard history is all very new to me, can you tell me what an 'Extra Man' did? Thanks again for your help. Mandy |

Mandy An Extra Man had a relationship with the Coastguards similar to the present Police Community Support Officer and the Police. They basically did the same job but the Extra Man was not on the formal establishment, and had limited powers. Martin |
