 Coastguards aboard Vanguard

My great grandfather was aboard Vanguard for the summer cruise in 1875 and I assumed he was aboard when she was rammed by Iron Duke. Recently I noted in an article that the last of the Coastguards had disembarked by the end of August. The accident occurred on September 1st so my question regarding the Cork based Coastguards, in particular the Roche's Point Station, is this: when and how did these men return to Cork? My great grandfather disembarked on August 29th when Vanguard was at anchor in Kingstown/Dun Laoghaire and given that Vanguard was part of the squadron going on to Cork on Sept.1st it is puzzling me how he and the others returned. |
