I'm trying to confirm the following information about Stephen Callen: he was born in Tenby 1780-1788 and married Susannah Howell there in 1818, he supposedly worked at Cobh (Cove) and Doolan, County Cork as a Boatman, Chief Boatman and Coastguard between 1828 - 1836 and then moved to the Thames estuary. In 1851 british census he's living as a retired pensioned coastguard in Kent and died in 1858. Any helpful comments would be most appreciated. Wolfy |

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I did find Stephen Callen at Cockleshell Hard CG Station. He was transferred to there from Garrison Point on 25 July 1840 as Chief Boatman. He was discharged from here in 1849 on a pension of £35 10/- per annum. Using this as a starting point you could use the ADM 175 records to trace his CG career. Alternatively I could do this for you from the records saved on my computer. However, CG records of this period contain little or no family or personal information. Hi Martin, thanks for the welcome and speedy reponse, I'm most grateful for the information. As I'm new at researching Coastguards I have no idea what the ADM 175 records are and would appreciate it if you could take a peep (if you've time). Once again, many thanks Regards Wolfy |

Hi Wolfy Most of the information I have confirms that in your original post, but I can now put dates to the places. Originally nominated to the CG Service on 12 March 1821 from Tenby, he was posted to Freagh Point as a Boatman. He was removed from here on 26 October 1821, following a promotion to Commissioned Boatman, and posted to Doolen. His next move was on the 5 April 1822, and a posting to Spanish Point. On the 5 February 1823 it was back to Doolen as Chief Boatman, from where he was removed to Cove on 1 May 1824. On 31 January 1829 he was transferred to Cork, then on 19 July 1833 it was a posting back to England, and No.1 Battery (Sandown), from where he was removed to Garrison Point on 26 Jan 1836; the rest you have from my previous post. Regards Martin |
