lyonnart
I am looking for my great grandfather who was from youghal cork information is scarce due to the family having almost died out i have tracked him down through his son my grandfather who came to england in 1892and joined the navy aged 16 he was from youghal and was born in 1876 he was married in 1896 and listed his father as edwin lyons who in his words was a coastguard man however my grandfather remarried in 1914 and listed his father as edward lyons and then he was chief officer of coastguards but deceased so i can find no record of him as a coastguard so to sum up he was from youghal and was maybe a boatman in the coastguard service in 1892 and was later promoted to chief officer somewhere between 1892 and 1914 and his name was either edwin or edward lyons and his sons name was thomas charles lyons i would be grateful if anyone could help me on this as due to ill health i am unable to travel to ireland to research this and have to rely on the internet but i have hit a brick wall with the irish records. please help if you can

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

Unfortunately you are seeking information about a period where there is a gap in the Coast Guard records. However, since both father and son were in the Navy after 1873 a service record will be held, and available online from the National Archives (@£3.50each).

I did a search and came up with only one possible for the father:

http://www.nation...ltcount=10

and one almost certain for the son, Thomas:

http://www.nation...ltcount=16

If you have not downloaded these documents already, I would caution you that they contain no family information. If there is any such information in local records Tony normally manages to root it outSmile

Hi

I'm at a loss on this one.

If Edward/Edwin was in the CG Service in 1896 when Thomas married, then there should be a service record held by the National Archives. All those that I looked at, the man was too young to be Thomas' father. The record I suggested might be Edward was from the earlier series i.e. pre 1873. Out of interest did this man ever enter the CG Service, or did he leave the Navy after completing his 10 years service?

The only option I can suggest, if you believe Edward was promoted to a Chief Officer, is to search the Navy Lists for the likely years he was a CO. There are a few on the site, but the latest is 1880, not late enough for you.

the record of edward you suggested shows he entered boys service in november 1854 but shows he was discharged in feb 1855 i cannot read the reason why. would my grandfather thomas birth be registered in dublin i cannot find it through ancestry .co.uk that would show his father edward and his place of residence also his profession
