Hello I have been researching my family on my mother's side and through the census data between 1861 - 1901 and I have had confirmed what I have been told by my parents (long since departed) that my great grandfather - Alfred Thorpe was a Coastguard and that my grandfather (George Thorpe) was born at Morriscastle in 1876. Looking at the 1871 Census data it seems that Alfred Thorpe was in the Royal Navy on HMS Inconstant. According to the 1891 census he is listed as being a Coastguard at Salcombe Regis but as my grandfather was born at Morriscastle I wonder if at some point he would have been based there. I don't seem to be able to find anything on the web site to confirm if this was - or was not the case, but I would be really interested to find out. Kind regards Nigel |

Hi Nigel, and welcome to the Forum. I can confirm that Alfred Thorpe was stationed at Morris Castle from at least 24 August 1875 until 16th June 1877, when he was transferred to Bar of Lough, Wexford. The Establishment Book (ADM 175/43 pages 334 & 513 of 562) show that he had been awarded 2 Good Conduct Badges, was rated as a Boatman, and was a Trained Man (TM). If you wished to take his CG service record both backwards and forwards, you can download the Establishment Books from the NA website for free, but be warned these are extremely large files!! The other option that may provide the same information, together with his earlier RN service, is to download his Service Record from the NA @ £3.50. (link below) http://www.nation...ltcount=10 Regards Martin |

Hello Martin Many thanks for the very speedy reply and for the information - that's really helpful. I'll try the service record at National Archives as you suggest. I don't know quite how this forum works but would it be useful for the archives of the Coasguards of Yesteryear if I were to pass on some of the information from National Archives....?? Kind regards and thanks once again. Nigel |

Hello Tony I have he detail on Alfred Thorpe, from The National Archives and as you would know, they are downloaded in PDF format. How ca I submit this to the Coastguards of Yesteryear site? I can see the submit photo part but on the submit article I can't see where you would attach a file. I suppose there could be an option to send it via email to you but guess I am just missing something obvious on the web site. Kind regards Nigel |

Hi Nigel, Click the "Post Reply" button, instead of using the "Quick Reply" box. There you'll see an Attachment upload box. Navigate to the file, pls make sure there are no spaces in the filename and that it's less than 250Kb. If the file is bigger than that, attach it to an email to me and I'll post it for you. Regards, Philip |

Hello Philip/Tony I attach the service records for Alfred Thorpe as per my earlier communication - thanks for letting me know how to attach and Thanks Tony for pointing me in the right direction. I may well see about the Establishment books but will find out quite how large the file is first. Having just attached the file, I notice that it does give all the file name from my "C" drive so I am now just wondering if it will open at your end?? If not, as you say maybe I wil attach it to an email and send it. Kind regards Nigel

Hi Nigel Thanks for posting Thorpe's Service Record. From this I can tell you that the NA will have his service record pre 1873. However, this is currently not available online. If you are'nt due to visit the NA any time soon, and you did wish to order it, this can be done online. The document is in the ADM 139 series, and according to the SR his Continuous Service Number is 29749A, this will cover his service from 1864 to 1873. The other piece of information I can give you is that he was awarded the RN Long Service Good Conduct Medal (the Traced M note on the SR). This would have been issued officially named, and may still exist. Regards Martin |

Hello Martin/Tony Back in March 2009 you sent detail of my Grandfather's record reference at the National Archives. I have eventually got round to downloading the naval record as this is now on-line and attach (hopefully!) the records for your information. Thank you for your help last year. Kind regards Nigel |
