We have an ancestor that was reputedly a sea captain. He was alive in 1911 as he attended his son's wedding in dublin. He reputedly was widowed and later remarried a coloured lady and was shunned by the family. We have searched the usual records but is there a list of ship's crews anywhere. ? many thanks Anne |

Hi Anne and welcome to the Forum. I don’t know what you consider to be the usual places, but I might try the following: The first is CLIP (Crew List Index Project) this covers the period 1861-1913. Unfortunately the database is currently unavailable, but the website does say that they hope to have it back on line by early 2009. http://www.crewli... If you believe your man was a Captain have you tried the to Lloyds Master Mariners & Mates index covering the period 1869-1911? http://www.histor...pintro.htm Finally, if he was Irish, and you believe he was still working between 1918 and 1921, I would also search the database on the following site: http://www.irishm... I hope this provides at least some new leads! Regards Martin |
