John Mars 1812-1888
DavidC
I am trying to obtain more information on the service records of John Mars who was shown in the censuses detailed below
1838 Coastguard at Folkstone, and living at Dymchurch in Kent (on marriage cert)
1841 Coastguard at Brownsea Island
1851 Missing in English census
1861 Missing in English census
1871 Missing in English census
1881 Descried as a Superannuated Coastguard living in Sussex
John is listed in the GENUKI.ORG.UK website in the Coastguard section
John is the son-in-law of Charles Ibbotson Cooper posted separately on this website.

I assume that John worked in Ireland during the missing years, because a much later census said his daughter Marian was born there in 1859, and his son Henry was born at Skreen, Sligo, Connnacht, Ireland in 1864. If anyone has any records mentioning John, or knows how I can get hold of them, then I would be very happy to hear from them.

Thanks

Hi David, and welcome to the Forum.

I have managed to piece together a good deal of John Mars career, unfortunately I do not have the very beginning or the end, but I hope this may answer some of your questions.

I first found him at Fort Twiss, where it is noted that he joined from ‘Mar(?) Wellington’, unfortunately this event is undated. I am assuming the ‘Mar’ is short for 'Mariner', since Wellington was a Revenue Cruiser. To confirm this, you would need to check the Muster Roll for Wellington at the National Archives, in ADM 119/138.

On the 17 August 1831 he was transferred from Fort Twiss to Lydd CGS with the rank of Boatman, and on the 17 February 1834 was promoted to Commissioned Boatman, remaining at Lydd.

4 August 1834 he is removed (transferred) to Tower 27
6 January 1838 removed to No.2 Battery (Dungeness)
11 October 1838 removed to Folkestone
18 January 1840 removed to Poole Harbour with rank of Chief Boatman
9 July 1841 removed to Trybane (Ireland)
13 January 1844 removed to Crawfords Bourne (also spelt Crawfordsburn)
30 September 1852 promoted and removed to Portavad as Chief Boatman in Charge.

At this point, from my information previously downloaded from the NA, the trail goes cold. However, if you were to go to the NA website it is possible to download and then search the ADM 175 (Coastguard) records for Ireland for 1852 and later.

I wish you well in your search.

Regards

As a new visitor to this website, I must say how thrilled I was to get your very quick response to my posting containing queries about John Mars and Charles Ibbotson Cooper. Thanks very much for that it was very much appreciated..

John Mars is the Gt Gt Gt Grandfather of my wife, and Charles Ibbotson Cooper the other person in my other posting is the father-in-law of John Mars. I have been researching my wife’s family for some years now and had known about the coastguard connection for quite some time, and had always thought that the only way to research their service records was to go to Kew and see them at the TNA. It was only the other day that I stumbled across this fantastic website.

Following your message, I have discovered for the first time how to download the PDF files from the TNA, and last evening I downloaded ADM 175/6 to get some English coastguard records. Later I will also get more files appropriate to the Irish connections. I would like to complete the John Mars story up to the point that he retired.

I am really amazed how quick you managed to respond with this very specific information. Do you have a connection with these men yourself, or do you just have a really amazingly comprehensive database? Now that I have downloaded my first file from the TNA, I have realised that it could take quite some time to do the research as trawling through handwritten documents of this size will be a slow process.

Once again many thanks for your help

David

Hi David

It is really nice when ones efforts are appreciated. There are a few who ask, get a response, and just walk away without acknowledging the help they receive – fortunately a very few.

On the issue of a database, now there would be a project! No, when I became aware that the ADM 175 series of documents were available for free, I download most of the early records; unfortunately my computer is a little old, and by today’s standards has limited storage capacity, hence the reason I could not get further forward in time for John Mars.

I extracted the information posted to you by following the trail from document to document. To someone new to these particular records this is quite daunting, but the more I research and use the records the better I understand how they are arranged, and some of the possible short cuts, but it still took some time to piece together both men’s careers.

All I would say is persevere, and enjoy the hunt!!

Sorry to butt in on this thread, but I just wanted to let you know that until I'd read this, I too hadn't realised that I could download the ADM175 series free! Not being a tech wizard, it took me some time to work out how to do it, but have now managed it! I think I may be here for a month of Sundays trawling through it all- but just wanted to say a big thankyou for alerting me to this service.
Thanks Martin.
