GGGgrandfather Pilcher Ralfe born 1796 Kent - died 1841 Isle of Man. Was in the Navy - Coastguards. First child born 1832 Bantry Bay Ireland, 2nd child born Sheerness 1836, and last two children born IOM 1838 & 1839. Assume the shift in locations was to do with the coastguards. Looking for any info that can tell us more about Pilcher. Cheers Dawn |

Hi Dawn, and welcome to the Forum. I have managed to find the following information: On the 30th May 1835 Lt. Pilcher, Chief Officer, was transferred from Castletown* to Garrison Point at Sheerness, and on the 7th October 1836 was again transferred to East End Lane, Sheerness. This appears to have been his last posting, because on the 26th August 1837 he was discharged having resigned. *There appear to be two Castletown's, one on the Isle of Man, and the other in Ireland. From the information you have provided I am assuming it is Ireland. Currently I do not have access to the Establishment Books for Ireland, otherwise I would have tried to follow his career back further. Hope this is of some help. Regards Martin |

Hello Dawn, The Castletown posting was to Ireland. Dublin Almanac and General Register by Pettigrew and Oulton Name. Ralfe, Pilcher. Rank. Lieutenant. Station. Castletown. County. Cork. Years 1835/6. Unfortunately I do not have any other mention of Pilcher Ralfe among my data-bases. Wishing you luck in your research. Tony |

Hi Dawn I have now managed to track Pilcher a little further back, and as Tony says he did serve in Charlestown, Ireland. On the 11th June 1831 he arrived at Hows Strand, Ireland, from Ramsey on the Isle of Man, and just a little over one month later on the 31st July 1831 was transferred to Charlestown, where he remained until 30th May 1835, when he was transferred to Sheerness. The other good piece of news is that I did find him in the Navy List which gives his seniority date as a Lt. as 20th August 1824. This means that he must have had prior RN service before joining the CG service. Can I suggest that you read Post 2 on a previous Forum reply (link below) about finding Lt. passing certificates that could help fill in some further details around his navy career. http://www.coastg...1#post_461 Finally the Navy List for 1842 records his death as October 21. Regards Martin |

Hi Dawn While at the National Archives today I had a look at Bruno Pappalardo's nominal index for Lt. passing certificates, but regret to say that Ralfe Pilchers was not listed. All I can now suggest is that you have a look at ADM 12 - indexes and digests of Admiralty out-letters to see if there is any correspondance relating to Ralfe, but I have to admit this is a bit of a long shot, and they are not the easiest series of documents to understand and find your way around. Regards Martin |

Hi Dawn To the best of my knowledge there is no online index for the ADM 12 series of documents. The only way to search these is in person at the National Archives. As I have said previously, these are some of the most difficult records to understand and search. I have only ever looked at these once when researching an officers Courts Martial, but if you want to get a flavour of what you would be up against, the NA have produced an online research guide. http://www.nation...fletID=380 Regards Martin |
