BIRTH OF HENRIETTA HARLOLND
Judy Berntsen
I am led to believe that Henrietta Harlond was born in Tilbride, Coounty Cork along with her twin sister Philippa on 21/8/1858 and her father was Henry Harlond who was in the Irish Coastguard. Has anyone got access to Irish records and can confirm this date or place of birth for me please. I have been conflicting evidence that she was not born in Ireland and her father was not in the coastguard.

Many thanks.

Civil registration only started in Ireland from around 1850 and was not widespread until 1870s and even then not fully compliant. Parish Birth/baprtism records usuallyprovide into from about 1800s-1900s but many parish record were destroyed in 1920s and even then not all births were recorded. So sometimes you have to make best guesses and here are mine.

There is a coastguard called Henry Harland in Killybegs in 1864. Transferred in 1851 from Teelin West to Killybegs 1856 to Tribane Donegal. In 1864 he was transferred to Sheephaven and he was promoted to Chief Boatman around this time. So from about 1850s to 1860s this Henry Harland was only in Donegal.

There are birth/baptism records for a number of Harlond children in Donegal around this time (no Henrietta or PHilippa). One was Samuel Alexander Harlond in 1864 to Hnery Harlond and Emma Brewer. In 1893 Samuel Alexander Harlond (Coastguard) marries Fowler and states that his father was Henry Harlond (deceased) Coastguard. Another child was Emily Bennat Harlond was baptised in Donegal in 1849.

There is a baptism record for Arthur Thomas Harlond born to Henry Harlond and Emma Brewer in 1872 in Mitchelstown, Cork.

There is a civil marriage record for Henrietta Harlond to Richard Talbot in 1878 in Mitchelstown district, Cork.

I suggest you get a copy of the Henriett's civil marriage record as it usually lists father's profession.

Marriages usually happen in the bride's hometown so I think Henrietta was living around Mitchelstown at the time.

You thought Henrietta was born in Tilbride Cork. I can't find a Tilbride - could it be Tribane - Henry's previous posting.

There is a record in Griffith's Valuation for Emma Harlond in Donegal which means she is a tenant of a house on the Main street, Killybegs. The valuations were taken around 1840s-1860s so it would be odd for Henrietta/Philippa to be born in Cork unless Emma Brewer had relatives in Cork but in 1850s it would a very long way to travel while pregnant.

edit:

In the 1891 England Census - there is a Philippa Harland entry born 1862 in St.Johns Point, Donegal - this is across the bay from Killybegs. She is a servant in St. Minver, Cornwall in the household of Edward A Sanford.

Thank you for all your information on the Harlond family. You have been very helpful to me in my research. I really appreciate all your help.

A Henry Harland was awarded the Baltic Medal for serving in Crimea War on Prince Regent. In the awards roll it I think it says medal was posted to Killybegs in 1851. So Henry was a navy man before a coastguard - this might solve some conflicts.

There may be a bit of a story in the background as Donegal is far away from Devon. There are two marriage records for Grace Emma Brewer - civil in Devon in 1848 to John Bennet (who dies 1849) and church in Kent in 1852 to Hnery Harlond. Emily (b 1849) has the name "Bennett" in her name which was the surname of Grace's first husband.
