Looking for Benjamin Kent & Family
Suzie Best
Hi there, my 3x G/Grandfather Benjamin Kent was in the Navy and then went into the Coast Guard. I am not sure what dates he did both of these, but his children were born in Ireland and England. I am unable to find his child who is my G/G/Grandmother's birth record as I have no idea where in Ireland she was born....So I am trying to track her father Benjamin Kent to see where he was at the time, and wondered if anyone could help? I am looking for specifically, Elizabeth Ann Kent, born Ireland, about 1835. If it helps, Benjamin's other children were born in Yougall, Cork and Ring, Waterford. Thanks. I would also like any information about Benjamin's time in Ireland and what he was doing and where he was, too.

Hi Suzie, and welcome to the Forum.

I'm not quite sure what information you already have on Benjamin, but I will give you everything I have found. The references against each one of his postings are the ADM 175 Coastguard Establishment Books available free from the National Archives, and the last number is the pdf ref.

Nominated to the CG Service from HMS Southampton with a first posting to Youghal on 12 Feb 1833 (175/16-72)
10 Oct 1834 to Helvick Head (175/16-70)
17 June 1835 promoted to Commissioned Boatman (175/18-69)
20 Nov 1838 to Youghal (175/18-71)
20 June 1840 to Greenway, England (175/6-243)
11 July 1840 to Birling Gap (175/7-217)
4 Oct 1848 to Holywell (175/7-215)
16 July 1850 to Hobb Head following promotion to Chief Boatman (175/7-777)
9 April 1860 to Burnham (175/7-641)
30 June 1860 pensioned.

While serving at Birling Gap he was issed with a Seamen's Ticket (No. 250,490) on this he gives his date of birth as August 1803, Rainham, Kent, and is described as 5' 7'' tall, brown hair, fresh complexion, grey eyes, with 'devices' on both arms (tattoos), first went to sea as an apprentice in 1816, served 4 years in the Royal Navy, when not employed lived in Chatham.

The National Archives hold a pension application for him ref ADM 29/62/183. You cannot download this, but it can be ordered online and takes about three weeks to come through. This would provide details of the ships he served on, and when, while serving in the Navy.

Hope this helps.

Oh wow, thank you VERY much, that is far more than I already had. I only had the small amount of info on the GenUKI site, but even that was more than I had 2 days ago when I got his daughters marriage certificate, as at that point I didn't even know who he was! I am thrilled that I was recommended this site. Thank you very much. Do you think it is worth getting his records from National Archives? When I looked it had something on him entering the Navy and something else on him entering Coast Guard, but it also said unavailable online, please sent message to quote for print and send option... so im confused!

Anyway, most appreciated. I will now keep looking for my G/G/Grandmother Elizabeths Birth now I have some idea where her father was posted for his job at that time. Cheers Smile

Suzie I'm pleased most of the information was new.

It sounds to me as though you found the NA ref to his pension application. If it were me I would order it, although it may turn out that he only ever served on HMS Southampton, but at least you would have a date when he first entered the Navy.

Do let us know what you finally find out.

Thank you for that, I have ordered and downloaded all the Coast Guard records from National Archives now, and it is interesting to go through them and see all the associated information so I can build up more of a picture of Benjamin's life and how and where his family must have lived. I have also sent away for a quote for getting his Naval records from National Archives as well, and if it is a reasonable cost, will get them printed off and mailed to me too. I appreciate this very much and will keep you posted. Smile
