Hi All, I am trying to confirm that my GtGtGrandfather George Raymond was stationed at Greencastle Fort, Inishowen Peninsula, in or about, 1831. His son Wentworth, has birth details on his Merchant Navy Records, as Greencastle Fort, Londonderry, April, 1831. George Raymond was LtChiefOfficer at Danaff Head, Derry from 13 Dec 1829 - then is listed at Lacken, Sligo from about 1837 onwards. He was posted back to Plymouth 1841. No Parish Records are known to have survived for the Lower Moville area of the Peninsula, nor have any census survived. I have checked the Navy Lists held at Dublin Public Library but all they contain are 'names and dates of commissions' but no coastguard stations are mentioned. I imagine the records at Kew, might hold some answers, but as I live in NZ, there's not much I can do about that right now! I have checked through CoY site, but find no reference. Am I missing anything here? Your advice appreciated. Regards, Marjery |

Marjery welcome to the Forum. It is possible to trace a Coastguards history using the ADM 175 files (CG Establishment Books) available as free downloads from the National Archives website. I have done this for George Raymond and extracted the following information: Nominated 30 Dec 1829 to Dunaff Head, he was then living in Tottenham Court Road, London (ADM 175/99 pdf 97 & 175/16 pdf 362), he then made the following moves: 5 April 1831 to Greencastle (175/16 - 374) 27 Aug 1832 to Rathlin Island (175/16 - 388) 10 Oct 1833 to Lacken (175/18 - 259) 9 April 1840 to Teillan West (175/18 - 285) 10 June 1841 to Ballycastle from where he was discharged to Command the Snipe, Cutter on 8 Dec 1841 (175/18 - 335) Hope this is of some help. Martin |

Martin, I don't know how to thank you enough for the information you have sent me. It's an incredibly important piece in the jigsaw that puts together my very early family and I always knew it was there somewhere. THANK YOU. I have been trying for many months, to put George and his son Wentworth 'in the same room' in order to confirm the few details that I already had for them. The references for National Archives are great and I will follow them up, I have found that website generally a bit daunting, you have to know your way around it. Will be reading all the Articles on CoY, to see what else may be of interest. The Fort, back in 1831, must have been a really rugged place. My Gt Grandfather was Wentworth Theodosius RAYMOND, how's that for a bit of drama. In appreciation, Marjery |

Marjery I'm pleased the information has enabled you to confirm a family tie, but I did wonder what other early information you have on GR? I ask because I believe he entered the Navy as an Able Seaman and made the transition from 'lower' to 'upper deck', during which time he took part in a famous ship to ship action. Martin |

Hi Martin, Yes, I do have the early information on GR, thank you - his coastguard years have been the mystery for me, as his official naval record only gives the starting and ending dates, of his service in Ireland. George has been well researched through the years and was commended for his part in the battle between HMS 'Shannon' and USS 'Chesapeake' whilst mid-shipman - and prior to his time in the coastguard. He had an amazing career, I haven't been fully able to take it all in myself, yet. I knew that he was eventually a Commander in the RN but have been informed recently that he made Commodore! I like to believe, that he would have looked back from time to time and remembered his days in the wilds of the Inishowen Peninsula, back then. Regards, Marjery |
