Captains Register
norman
I would like to obtain details of an ancestor from the "Captains Register" kept in the Guildhall Library, London. I have the full details, but they are asking a fee of £50 to send them to me.
Would anyone be in the library in the near future? I will pay any expenses incurred.

Are you still looking for someone to check some details for you at the Guildhall? I was planning on going there soon to look up some info for myself. Let me know

Hi Sally. That would be great if you could help.
Do you want to get in touch, or will I put the details in the forum?

Hi Sally, here are the details. I have been told that photocopying the register is not allowed, but it might be allowable to photograph it.
Would it be possible also to get details of the Board of Inquiry?
Thanks, Norman

Name : George Henry Williams

Place and date of birth : Bunbeg, Donegal 1868

Certificate number : 022049

Place certificate awarded : Liverpool

Date of certificate : 1894

Special qualifications : ---

Details of his voyages 1894-5, 1897-8, 1900-1, 1903-5 and 1907-10 are also recorded in the Captains Registers. However the relevant entries are lengthy and I regret that shortage of staff time prevents us from extracting them for you. The Register containing Williams' final voyages [G.L. Ms 18567/87] includes details concerning the wreck of the 'Crompton' in November 1910 which appear to have resulted in a Board of Trade inquiry. The Captains Registers are freely available for consultation in the Library by members of the public or by searchers working on their behalf. Details of access are given below. A leaflet about the Registers is available on our website, http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/capreg.htm.
