PATRICK BARRY
highseas1
My ancestor Patrick Barry was a member of Irish coastguard service. Details as follows:

Believed to be stationed at CAHIRTRENT STATION in Co Kerry circa 1865.

His son John was baptised in Dingle RC Church in 1865. Son Thomas in 1870, same church.
Cahirtrent station is listed as his address at this time

I would very much appreciate if any person who reads my post has any information on the above or if any of his sons joined the service, to please contact me.

Thank you in anticipation

Welcome to the Forum Highseas.

Patrick entered the CG service on 31 October 1853, having previously worked as a mariner on the Revenue Cruiser Badger, with a first posting to Ballydavid (ADM 175/19 pdf 167).

On the 21 November 1856 he was transferred to Brandon, and then on 24 September 1861 to Ventry. His next move was to Dingle on 20 May 1863, then back to Ventry on 19 July 1864 following his promotion to Commissioned Boatman.

He was to remain at this station to at least 1876 when the ADM 175 records end. However, the later books in the series provided a date and place of birth (Castletownsend, Cork 15 November 1823), and his Official Number (75213). Downloading this from the National Archives website will allow you to complete his service history:

To find the earlier details of his career you could consult Badger's Muster Book (ADM 119/14), unfortunately this can only be done in person at the NA, Kew.

I have also checked my database of those CG's who served in the RN during the Crimean War, and am 99% certain that Patrick served on HMS Caesar, being awarded the Baltic Medal.

Hi Martin thank you so so much for your message and all information on Patrick. It has only been coincidence )that I discovered he was in Coastguard due to station being address on one of his sons baptism record.

I then googled and arrived on this excellent site.
Patricks son DENIS b circa 1856 (married to my g.aunt) was born in Co Kerry would be while Patrick was in BRANDON.

Interesting that Patrick probably served in Crimean war and was awarded a medal.

Have been trying to locate record for DENIS BARRY b.1856. I know he married in QUEENSTOWN CORK IRELAND in 1886. On this date his address was given as HMS REVENGE. Any suggestions?

Patrick also had a daughter KATIE born in CO KERRY in 1886. You mentioned after 1876 ADM record ends. Does this suggest we dont know where he was after this date? I have Patrick in 1911 census living in Skibbereen co cork Retired from Civil Service Commission living with wife & daughter age 25
SO i have lots of research ahead which would not be possible only for your excellent information
again my heartfelt thanks. Sincerely, Frances

Only the ADM 175 series of records end for Ireland in the 1870's, but the service records continue (ADM 139 or 188).

I've looked at these for Den(n)is and found two, one pre and the other post 1873. In one he gave his date of birth as 7 March 1850 and the other the year is now 1852.

Below is the link to his post 1873 record, which should confirm that we have the right man - he will be serving on HMS Revenge in 1886 - it will also have a reference to his pre 73 service number in the top left hand corner.
