Henry Penter ref 14/22 poss tribane 1901
leemason
Hi, My great grandad Henry Penter born Polruan in the parish of lanteglos near fowey in cornwall was a coastguard in ireland. Whilst he was there my grandmother was born. She died in 1980 but she had told my mum it was a place called newtown though we think this may be wrong as she left ireland when she was young. Looking on your site i have found a record for henry penter in the 1901 census being based at tribane. I'm planning on taking my mum (whose 74) to ireland for the first time at the end of the month and she is very keen to be able to visit where my grandmother was born and any coastgaurd stations that my great grandad was based out of. I would be very pleased for any help or advice where i could find out further details.
Thank you for taking the time to read this

Hi Lee, and welcome to the Forum.

Your best bet is to download his service record from the National Archives website. It would appear that there are two men of this name, both born in Lanteglos, but four years apart. If you know his actual date of birth (the date in the 'Date' column) then you will get the right record first time.

This will detail his whole career, giving the names of all the CG Stations he worked at.

In the 1901 Census there is a Henry Penter (age 31) Coastguard Boatman posted in Donegal wife Laura and son Clarence age 8months.

If this is your family then you can also look in familysearch.org at Irish GRO records - for example a Florence Mary Penter birth was registered in Newtonards Co., Down in 1904 might be a possibility if Henry Penter was stationed Co. Down around the same time.

The above Penters are not in the Irish 1911 Census but in the UK 1911 there are possible matches for the above Penters (Henry, Laura, Florence and Henry Clarence) in Liskeard, Cornwall but this could be coincidence as there very many Penters in Liskeard - you would need to look at 1911 household Census record - if it is the right family it should also give place of birth

Edit:

On Ancestry.co.uk there are 3 family trees (one of which is a Mason tree) with a Penter Family which has a Florence Mary Penter as being born 1 Sep 1904 in Ballyhaskin, Co. Down and died 8 Apr 1982 and m. Robert James Green. There was a coastguard station (Millisle ?) in Ballyhaskin and Newtonards is the nearest big town .

Hi, Thats brilliant help. Pretty much all the Penters in the Polruan area are related together and they had a habit of reusing names frequently (such as nathanel Penter) And a few of them were in the coast gaurd at one point or other. Thats definately the right one as my mum talked of a uncle Clarence and I know my great grandmother was named Laura.
And yep she married Robert Green and moved with him to Northumbria so Newtown was probably Newtonards. When she was born she had a injured neck and had to go into the nearest town each week for what we would probably call physio now days. I was always told they moved to cornwall when my grandma was 5/7.
Thats great use for me, my mums memory has started going with age so she has trouble with remembering the stories, and my grandma on several accounts wasn't adverse to altering a story to improve the telling which makes it harder too.
Thank you for this. Does anyone know if Millisle is still standing and if there would have been specific coast guard cottages?
thanks again

I'm basing my info from the Ancestry site which could be wrong - I think if you want to be sure you should get the Coastguard record from Kew - only 3.50 just in case was'nt in Millisle but perhaps Donaghadee as both are close together. The GRO birth record will take time if you order it from the NI GRO

Hi, Yep i bought the Kew download this morning, and have been trying to decipher the handwriting which isn't an easy task. It lists off a series of ships then coast gaurd postings:-
limerick tribane 12 july 99 - 7 june 04 as btm
millside 8 june 04 - 17 nov 05 as btm then either lom btn or com btn?
round stone 18 nov 05 - 12 oct 09
ringsend 13 oct 09 - 20 jan 10.
So i have now rearranged my visit, ditched waterford and cork and instead plan to go these places, Had a look at round stone which looked a pretty village on the web and the amuzing this is the gaelic name means rock of the seals, where as where he was from polruan means bay of the seals in cornish.
Any more info about those 4 stations would be brilliant though i have been looking through here. Read somewhere about a comanding officer being killed at millisle? was ringsend an active station or was it just a office and does it still exist. Thank you again to you both for the help you have provided.

I suggest looking at the Irish ordnace survy site as you can see maps from the 1860's (Historic 25) which has a lot of the stations marked accurately -

When the URLs below open - except for Millisle click on the Historic 25" for 1860s map when many coastguard built.

Millisle

There are now Coastguard holiday cottage in Millisle advertised for rent

Roundstone - lovely small village but can get crowded in summer.
http://maps.osi.i...739854,7,9
Possible Streetview of coastguard cottages
http://maps.googl...70.63,,0,0

Ringsend - part of the port of Dublin - not very nice now. Click on Ortho 2005 to get recent satellite view and lots of containers near cottages.

Tribane is in Donegal - not sure where the station is exactly supposedly not far from Dunkineely.

To cover all these stations you would have to do a lot of driving along small country roads.

Brilliant thank you, Was looking earlier on google maps and it seems quite daunting but i grew up in devon and we have our fair share of country lanes and 2 years ago i drove out to finland which was a mission so i hope i can cope with these (and i hope these aren't infamous last words Smile and i think i'm a bit ocd when i set my self a target i go for it and will certainly make my holiday a lot more rewarding to have a mission to complete.
The Ringsend area did look a bit industrial on google satelite which is why i was wondering if it was just a control office.
Again thank you and i think i am going to have a bit of a task organising all my trip now.

Account of the 1840 Millisle murder can be found here - halfway down page. It may have been in the old coastguard building as many stations were rebuilt around 1860s
