Hi there, I'm looking for a coastguard - Anthony Scanlon - who was active in the 1830s and 40s. He emigrated to the U.S. about 1848. In America, he was described by a local newspaper as "for many years a member of the coastguard in the British service, stationed at Killala Bay, County Mayo." Anthony may also have been stationed in Donegal about 1834/5/6. A newspaper obituary of his son - Anthony Scanlon Jr. (d. 1904) says "he was born in Donegal, Ireland. His father was a coast-guard, and occasionally brought his wife with him on his tours." I've examined TNA's ADM175 files but have only found a John Scanlon. If you have any information can you post here, or email me at fiona.fitzsimons@eneclann.ie ? Thanks, Fiona. |
