Bannow 1890 to 1910

Hi

Census of 1901 shows the following as commissioned boatman / coast guards at Bannow life station.

Frederick Gammon - formerly of Kent
Benjamin Barnes - formerly of Devon

Does anyone know why / how they would have moved to Ireland. Would they have been posted or would it have been a life choice?

I am interested as Frederick's son and Benjamin's daughter are my Grandad's parents.

Any insight into this time would be gratefully received.

Thanks, Emma

Hi Emma

As I understand it they were posted and the cost of moving the family meet by the CGS, although those Irishmen nearing the end of their service do appear to have been posted back to Ireland at their own request. For an Englishman not a favourite posting because the rates of pay for those serving in Ireland were lower than in the rest of GB.
