I am trying to trace my maternal great grandfather John Bowling . On his daughter Sarah's marriage certificate , 1858, his occupation is recorded as ' coastguard'. The 1851 Census shows Sarah's place of birth ' Scotland', but my mother believes there is an Irish connection somewhere in her family. I have found a John Bowling on the Navy Vessels list as follows: 9 Apr.1844 Civilian 2nd. Mate "Bat" Castletown I can find no England census records for John , or Sarah before her marriage to my grandfather Arthur Waters, Bloomsbury London. I have also searched Irish and Scottish records with no success Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated Val Fish |

Hi Val, and welcome to the Forum. To trace John Bowling's career from 1839 to 1861 you need to download ADM 175/24 from the National Archives website; this can be done for free. I would suggest that you look a the Revenue Cruiser Shamrock first, and then follow his movements from Cruiser to Cruiser. You will see that he is first noted when appointed as Gunner on Shamrock, although he was serving previously as a Mariner on the same vessel prior to this, this is because only Standing Officers are listed for these ships in the records. To trace his earlier career you would need to consult Shamrock's Muster Book at the National Archives (ADM 119/113). You will find that this series of records ends in 1861. Since he commanded a Revenue Cruiser (Dolphin) at this date you could try consulting the Navy Lists, some of which are available online via Google Books, but the whole series is held at the NA, Kew. I have checked, and he does still feature in the 1866 Navy List, as Chief Officer of Dolphin (tender to Pembroke, Harwich). Hope this is of some help. Regards Martin |

Further to my post above, I have now done a little more digging and found that another John Bowling also entered the CG Service on 21 October 1834, having been Nominated from HMS Dublin. Originally he was supposed to take up his posting at Birling Gap, but this was cancelled and he was sent to Blatchington, from where he made the following moves: 26 June 1835 to Holywell 12 April 1836 to Christchurch 1 November 1836 to Mundsley 27 December to Blackwater in Ireland (ADM 175/6 pdf 612 of 779) 11 April 1839 to Rosslare 6 January 1841 to Belfast 22 March to Cahore 23 September 1845 to Wicklow 4 July 1846 to Killough - Punishment 10 November 1846 to Sheephaven - Punishment 9 July 1850 to Killough - Punishment 25 July 1850 to Port a Ferry 22 April 1852 Discharged with pension of £12/4 annually. (ADM 175/19 pdf 413 of 472) Returning to his original nomination to the CG Service, ADM 175/78 (pdfs 110 and 111 of 394 - Nom. No. 5025) from this he appears to give his place of birth as Dumfriesshire and his wifes as being Devonport, but perhaps you would like to check this for yourself. Martin |

Thank you so much Martin for all that info. My computer hasn't the capacity to download the necessary docs, but dear old hubby is having a go at the office. Fingers crossed, Regards Val |
