My great grandfather was listed in 1901 census as a 'naval pensioner' which we presume means Irish Coastguard. Would this be right. His name was John Mills and in 1901 was living in Co. Sligo. Would love some information to help us with family history. |

Hi, and welcome to the Forum. Because your ancestor was a Naval Pensioner, it does not necessarily follow that he had been a Coast Guard. However, I see from the 1901 Census that he was born c.1820 in Cork, and there was a CG of that name working at Killybegs in 1865, who gave his place of birth as Cork on 10 October 1819, so possibly your man. What you need is some further information. If you have details of any of his children, their dates and places of birth, it would be possible to trace his career using the CG records to see if there is any correlation between the two. It should also be possible to trace his career to his discharge, which may result in him moving nearer to his final home in Rathlee. Martin |

Thank you Martin,Have just found in sons baptism record that John Mills listed as Coast Guard pensioner. I live in Australia and finding it hard to come accross info. He was married to Hannah Gibson in 1871 (may be his 2nd marriage) and had children names George, Hannah,John,Elizabeth,Ernest and Kathleen. Would appreciate any help possible. (a really interesting site to read about) thank you kathy |

Kathy Since you have confirmed that he was a Coast Guard, and on the basis of the following research, I'm inclined to think that the above is your man. I have traced his career from entry until he left the service in 1869. He was nominated to the CG Service from HMS Frolic on 14 January 1843, with afirst posting to Cloger Head. He subsequently made the following moves: 19 March 1845 to Mynish 15 April 1848 to Rachley following promotion to Commissioned Boatman 21 September 1848 to Pullocheney 12 February 1861 to Tribane 30 November 1861 to Dooran 17 October 1862 to Killibegs 24 June 1868 to Ballycastle following promotion to Chief Boatman 22 August 1869 to Ross 15 October 1869 Discharged - Unfit for Service. I can also tell you that he was one of those CG recalled to the navy during the Crimean War, serving on HMS Prince Regent, where he was awarded the Baltic Medal. To find out more about his service prior to joining the CGs you would have to consult Frolic's Description Book, which can only be done at the National Archives. Hope this is of some help in any further research. Regards Martin |
