Elizabeth Ravenna Emery

Hi
I am looking for any information about Elizabeth Emery born 3rd Nov 1864 in Ballycastle Mayo.
Her father Thomas Emery was in the coastguard/navy, I believe the navy carried out that job. Mother Sarah.
In the 1961 census he was on the St George, would this have been stationed near Ballycastle or did they live and work ashore with their families?
Thankyou

Louise

Hi Louise, and welcome to the Forum.

I have checked the CG records and it would appear that Thomas entered the CG Service from the Royal Navy, his last ship being HMS St George. He was first posted to Ballyglass in 1862, from where he was transferred to Ballycastle, as Divisional Carpenter, on 15 October 1864. His next move was to Cappa CG Station in Sept 1866.

I did manage to find him on the CG Establishment book for Valiant. While most naval records lack any family information this particular record did provide his date and place of birth, which was Bristol, Somerset on 14 April 1834.

Using this info I checked the Seamans Service Records at the National Archives and found two entries for Thomas:

I note that he first enlisted in the Navy in 1854, the start of the Crimean War. If you download his records and then let me know what ships he served on I will check any appropriate medal rolls.

I'm sorry I cannot help with your specific request for information, but I hope the above is of some interest.

Regards

Martin
