John Bumby - Coastguard Circa 1850's
Christopher Wood
We have managed to trace my great grandmother Matilda Bumby as being christened on 3rd July 1859 at the parish church of Ireland at Achill & Dugort Cofi, South Mayo. Her father (our great great grandfather) John Bumby was a coastguard and we assume that he was stationed in the region. We do not have a date of birth for John. Matilda's mother was Harriet Amelia and siblings were Samuel 1861 and Elizabeth 1864.
Matilda married Henry Guppy at Bideford Devon december 1884. We have not managed to find out how Matilda came to be in the west country although we assume some sort of maritime connection .

Would very much like to track down John birth date and place. Assuming he was in his twenties when Matilda was born he would have been born between 1829 and 1839 .

Would also like to find out if there any Bumby descendants of Samuel and Elizabeth on the island or elsewhere

Best regards
Chris

Hello Tony, many thanks for your swift reply, I must now do some digging around to see if I can find the death records for John to see if he stayed on Achill or was posted/moved elsewhere at a later date. which might account for Matilda ending up in the west country.
With kind regards
Chris

There are no Bumby records in the Irish GRO so it looks like Bumby fanily left Ireland after about 1870 and
never came back.

There is a single NA Seamen service record for John Bumby b. 21 July 1827 Great Grimsby Lincolnshire. You could buy this and it may tell you where John moved around.

In ADM 175/20 for Keel it shows a John Bumby being transferred to Tenby in Jan 1866. Tenby is in Pembrokeshire.

There is an 1871 UK Census For a Bumby Famiily - Coastguard building Bideford Devon
John Head - Coast guard officer 42 b Girmsby Linc.
Harriet Officers wife 39 b Yarmouth Norfolk
Hannah 14 b Ireland
Matilda 12 b Ireland
Elizabeth 6 b Ireland
William Henry 4 b. Pembrokeshire
Adelaide 11 months b Devon

There are more UK census records for John Bumby in 1881, 1891 and 1901. Summarised under the John Bumby entry here http://www.genuki...s/A-B.html

It looks like Samuel has died as there seem to be no record of him.

There is a 1916 death record for a John Bumby in Bideford age 89 see http://www.freebm...amp;scan=1

Hi Chris

Just to add a little further history for your man, during the Crimean War he was recalled to the navy, serving on HMS Caesar as an Able Seaman; he was sent his Baltic Medal in 1857.

According to Caesar's Description Book he was born around 1828 in Lincolnshire.

John entered the CG Service from the Revenue Cruiser Desmond (could be Diamond?) in 1853 - Nomination No.3788 - with a first posting to Achill Beg.

To Tony, bpa,Martin,

Many many thanks for the time you have taken to tie up the missing pieces of the Bumby puzzle.
we now have the Achill/ Bideford connection. Interestingly enough John Bumby's granddaughter
(my grandmother) and my grandfather returned to Bideford when they bought a house there in the late 1940's , I have a vague recollection of visiting when I must have been about 7 or 8 years old.
Will keep you all posted if we find out any more on John.
Best regards
Chris
