James COBHAM CG: searching for earlier mariner records
Shamrock
A few years back, Tony (thank you, Tony!) found the birth records of the children of my James COBHAM. The problem is I have never been able to find his birthplace and parents. I do have
most of his CG records but no prior mariner records.

ADM 175/77 Folio 81 Register of Nominations 1827-1832

Number: 2714
Date of Order of Nomination: 5/7/1831
Date of Leter of Nomination: 23/5/1831
Name: James Cobham
Nominated for: Boatman
Nominated from: Sligo
Sent for First Examination: Sligo
Station appointed to: Paignton
In whose vacancy: W. Bungard
Date of Report of 1st Exam: 9/7/1831
Date of Report of Qualification: 19/7/1831

He was transferred to Brixham, Devon, England (where he married + 1 child); then to Broadstairs, Isle of Thanet, Kent (8 children)and then was transferred back to Ireland - Belfast, Dartmouth, Ramsgate- on and on. He immigrated to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada by 1865.

CG records for an Alexander COBHAM (James had named one of his sons Alexander) were
also found (CG on 1841 Scotland; 1851 England): mariner records show he was born c1798,
Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. I have a lot of his records.

The only tie-in is that there was an Alexander COBHAM who lived in Carrickfergus during the 1780s-1790s. There was also a Rev. James COBHAM (during early 1700s) - for over 50 years - nearby in Ballycarry who appears to have had a son also named James COBHAM (perhaps a
generation before my James COBHAM).

So.. I am back to square one - where James COBHAM signed on in Sligo, Ire in 1831 & all records show he was born in Ireland. Why Sligo?? I am searching for those earlier mariner records -
looking for suggestions.
