Richard It would be helpful if you could give an approximate timeframe. If he was in the PWG, I assume that this is pre 1822? Martin |

Richard Since my post above I've been doing some digging around I have come up with the following. William Sterne was advanced to a Lieutenant on 23 August 1813, if you can get to the National Archives where his 'Passing Certificate' may be available - they have an index to these, compiled by Bruno Pappalardo, a member of staff at the NA. He was advanced to Inspecting Commander on 11 October 1823. A check of officers service records in the ADM 196 series of documents, which can be downloaded from the NA, returned the following: http://www.nation...ultcount=6 I think it would be well worth the £3.50 to download this. Richard, sorry for drip feeding this information, but it takes some time to check all possible sources!! The following is from O'Bryne's Biography of Naval Officers written in 1849: William Sterne: Entered the navy 7 March 1804, as 1st Class Vol., on board the Leda 38, Capt Robert Honyman. Continued in that frigate until wrecked at the entrance to Milford Haven 31 Jan 1808, he was present as Midshipman at the reduction of the Cape of Good Hope (where he witnessed the surrender of the Rolla brig and Volontaire frigate; likewise in all the operations in the Rio de la Plata which preceeded the evacuation of Spanish-America; and in the attack made by Admiral Gambier upon Copenhagen. On 9 sept 1806 he assisted as Midshipman in the destruction of an armed brig off Monte Video. Being promoted in Oct 1808 Master's Mate of the Proselyte bomb (Ketch), Capt Henry Jas Lyford, he was again, in that vessel, wrecked, 5 Jan 1809, by the ice in the neighbourhood of Anholt, which island he succeeded, with the rest of the officers and ships company, in reaching after a most severe and hazadous walk of eight miles. He remained at Anholt until relieved six weeks later, by the Ranger sloop, Capt Geo Acklom, under whom we find him during the next three years, employed in the Baltic. From 6 May 1813 until 30 Sept 1814, he served as Acting-Lieutenant and Lieutenant (commission dated 23 Aug in the former year) in the Semiramis 36, at the Cape of Good Hope; since 11 Oct 1823 he has filled the appointment of Inspecting Commander in the Coast Guard. I have looked in the CG records and to date have found him at Killala, from where he was transferred on 30 Sept 1843 to Wexford; and from here he was transferred to Dingle on 2 Oct 1846, and then Youghal on 20 Oct 1854, from where he was discharged to pension on 9 June 1859. One final piece of infomation, his second son, Robert, born 1833, followed his father into the navy. Regards Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 27/11/2009 23:57 |
