Thomas Frederick Brown Carne

I have found a marriage record in 1857 - in Kilkeel Co. Down, for the above named person, noted on his marriage certificate as a Coastguard at Derryogue - his father was named as William Carne, noted as Chief Officer in the Navy.

Thomas married Mary Ann Nicholson, also of Derryogue, Kilkeel. As there are no census records available until 1901 for anywhere in Ireland I am wondering if anyone knows any more about what happened to Thomas and Mary Ann - and any children they might have had - and where.

Also any information on his parents.

Thank you for anything that might be found!

Welcome back to the Forum Sheila.

I had a quick look at the Establishment Books and found that Thomas was nominated to the CG Service from the Revenue Cruiser Chance on 7th July 1857. His first posting was to Cranfield Point, Kilkee, from where, on the 6th July 1858, he was transferred to Youghal.

This was to be his first and last move, because he was discharged to pension on 14th April 1859.

In 1847 the RC Chance was based at Carlingford, so I would suspect that in later years she was still in Irish waters. To find out when Thomas first joined her, and from where, you would have to check her muster roll at the NA Kew. Since 'Carne' is an English, West Country name, I would not be surprised if Thomas was not originally from this part of the world.

I also checked the NA online catalogue, and found a pension application from a Thomas Carne, Coastguard (ADM 29/62/131), and while the dates do not tie up exactly, I think this is your man.

Firstly - my sincere apologies for not replying sooner! I "wandered" off in search of other Nicholsons and completely forgot about Mary Anns marriage to Thomas Carne.

Once again I have to thank you Martin! The timing of the transfer from the Revenue Cruiser to the Coast Guard fits in with the March 1857 marriage of Thomas Carne. Thank you also for the locality advice. I shall try to find out some more about the family in that area - and also Youghal. Perhaps the family moved back to England when Thomas was pensioned so maybe I might find them in the 1861 English census - somewhere!!

Thank you so much for the information!!

All the best

Sheila
