ALLPORT family - Cork
Helen
Hello all,

Three Allport brothers came to Ireland in the 1830's and 40's from Birmingham. They were gunsmiths and set up shop in the city of Cork. George Allport (a son to one of them) was born in Cork about 1844. He married Julia Margaret Isum in Cork c1868. They had 6 children - 4 girls and 2 boys.

And now for the exciting bit! George Allport(1844 - ) AND his two sons Frank Herbert (1882-1902) and George Richard (1878-1905) were all members of the service. Using links from this website, I have downloaded the service record for all three of them. What a tidal wave of information! I have spent several hours in the site finding information and photos of a way of life that has been an education for me.

Service records showed that Frank Herbert b 1882 died age 20 from Enteric fever and George jnr b 1878 was pensioned out of the service in 1905 because of epilepsy. George snr attained the rank of Chief Officer and took a pension from Crosshaven in Jan 1899 - age 55.

Questions!
I have the 1911 census records for George snr and family in Courtmacsherry, Cork. (Also Wales census 1881 - Allpool)
How do I get the 1901 Cork census records for:
George jnr #20 George Allport born Cork - stationed at Cork
George snr # 216 George Allport born Cork City and stationed at Crosshaven - family details would be v helpful

George snr service record has reference to former service possibly starting in 1859. Can I get hold of this? How?

Any other information on the Allport family would be gratefully accepted.

Thank you to all who have built and maintained such an informative site.
Regards, Helen

Hi Helen

I can answer one of your questions.

To order a seaman's service record that is not yet available online you need to go to the following page at the National Archives website:

http://www.nation...menu_shop3

Then just follow the instructions, but do give as much information as possible when getting an estimate, because this will ensure you get the right document. For information the pre 1873 service records are in ADM 139, and you should have a CS**** number for your man. The reference number could also include an 'A' or 'B' at the end; it's important that this letter is included, because there were three series of numbers e.g. CS 3452, CS 3452A & CS 3452B within the ADM 139 service records.

Hi Helen

Based on Tony's findings that Julia's father was also a Coast Guard I checked the index and found that Richard Isum joined the CG Service from HMS Java & Boudicia. From his Nomination Number (5234) I worked out that this must have been some time in 1835, so I checked the Nomination Book in ADM 175/78 and found that it was on the 7 February 1835, his first posting being to Hove.

From this it should be possible to trace his entire CG career, and with a bit of luck, if he was still in England in 1841, find him in the Census.

You could also order his Pension Application from the NA to establish his earlier naval career:

Hello Martin and Tony,

Great work guys - go straight to the top of the class. You have provided missing information that has eluded me for years.

I am going away until the end of the month and will not have access to a computer. Will spend some serious time in the NA site when I return. Will let you know what I find.

Thanks very much for the information on Laura Mabel Allport's marriage. Her sisters names were Selina Louise (b1869 in Co. Cork), Amelia (c1880 in Pembrey, Wales) and Julia Edith (29/8/1876 - 1952 also born in Pembrey, Wales). Julia Edith emigrated to Mackay, Queensland, Australia in 1910 to marry William Henry Hobbs (1872-1946) who was born in Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. Julia Edith was my grandmother. She had been educated in Dublin and was teaching in Borrisokane where she met her future husband. I can't imagine her shock/surprise/words fail me when she arrived in the middle of winter with the temperature about 28C and going to live on a block of virgin scrub that her husband and his brother were clearing to grow sugar cane and raise beef cattle. To our knowledge she never returned to Ireland for a visit.

Do you have any information on Selina or Amelia? Their father George was transferred to Roche Point in Nov 1886 and pensioned from Crosshaven in 1899. I am assuming that Selina and Amelia, if they married, would have done so in Cork. I am hoping that the 1901 Irish census will show if they are still with the family. Perhaps their brother George Richard was there also as he was pensioned off in 1905 due to epilepsy.

Your Isum information was a major breakthrough for me. I knew that Julia Margaret Isum was born in Dingle, Co. Kerry - her dad (and mum) must have been stationed there in 1844.

Thanks again for your efforts and information,
Helen
