I am trying to find out about my gt grandather John Steven born Glasgow 1842. In 1858 at age 16 he joined the Royal Navy and served on various ships (I have the details). He then he transferred to the Coastguard in 1868 when he joined HMS Valiant at Crookhaven. He was on HMS Vanguard when it was sunk by HMS Iron Duke in 1875. He served as a Boatman on the following:- Valiant,RoyalGeorge,Pallas,Audacious,Vanguard,Iron Duke,Topaze,Hercules,Belle Isle and Shannon at various places including Crookhaven,Castletown,Lawrence Cove and Kileredane He retired 1889 ..I want to find where he might have lived during his service and later. He married a Mary Driscoll in the Cork area about 1873 and had a large family including my Grandmother Louisa born about 1874/5 I would like to know where the family lived. Louisa is said to have taught school at Rerrin,Bere Island presumably before he marriage to Terence Howard in1902. She was widowed about 1913 and later came to England. John Steven came to be known as Stevens at some stage in his life. Any info would be welcome especialy any indication of his later occupation andwhere the family might have lived and a marriage record might indicate the name of John's parents Many thanks Simon Bryant |
