My great grandfather, Moses Cull, was a Royal Naval Coastguard stationed at Youghal and then Knockadoon. He drowned on 4 November 1884 and, according to the Irish Times, was returning from Youghal to Knockadoon with some fellow coastguards when he drowned whilst crossing a causeway over the River Fannisk . The inquest of 10 November 1884 gave his place of death as “Ring, Youghal Bay”. His death was registered in the registration district of Youghal in the district of Killeagh. I would very much like to find his grave and also the location of the place where he drowned, together with details of the inquest report. He married Mary Ellen Stack in Cork in the Church of Ireland on 19 October 1882 while stationed at Youghal and moved to Knockadoon Head (Greenland) where he lived in a coastguard cottage with his wife and son John, born in August 1883. He drowned before his daughter Mary was born leaving a widow and two children. His wife died in 1893 in the Home for Incurables, Cork. The two children were taken in and brought up by the Moore family locally. I am coming to Cork and Youghal in September and would appreciate any information relating to Moses. Thank you for any help and information. Marylyn Rolfe (nee Cull) |
