I have been trying to trace the movements of my Great Grandfather, Henry Herbert Symons and his daughter, my Grandmother, Alice Louisa Symons. Although I knew where he lived in the latter part of his life in and where he was born, I could find no trace of the family in any of the Enlish censuses after 1881. And the reason for this, as I have recently discovered, is that he was in the Coastguards in Ireland. A recent expedition to the National Archives produced his Naval record from 1873 to 1884 when it finishes with him transerring to the Coastguards. The assistants were of little help in finding out any further information (their suggested records did not cover the right time period), but suggested taking a look at this excellent site. It has already been quite helpful because he does appear in the 1901 census. I am hoping that someone will be able to provide the information which will allow me trace his movements around Ireland and in particular when and where did he return to in England. My Grandmother was born in Wexford, so they were presumably there at some point. His time in the Coastguards matches the example detailed elsewhere on the Site, so I guess there must be some way of finding the information. Any help would be gratefully received, Colin |
