Michael O'Hare was born at Leestone, Kilkeel, Co.Down in July of 1841. I have downloaded his Coastguard record from the National Archives dated from 1873 which confirms his service around the coast of Co.Down. I understand however, from the British Coastguards 1841 - 1891 site that Michael also had service prior to this on at least HMS Greyhound in 1861 during the Crimea War. As I am not able to get to the National Archives to view the earlier record (I live in Ireland), I wonder if someone would be kind enough on their next visit to the NA to take a look at this for me?? I also believe that Michael had a brother Patrick O'Hare who was also a Seaman but who died on 26th November 1881 at sea. This information was obtained from a record of the Administration of his Estate here in Ireland, which was granted to his father Daniel. Hopefully Sheila |

Hi Sheila I have just returned from the NA, and undertook the research you requested. Michael O'Hare, Ships No 137, HMS Greyhound, rated Ord. discharged 30th Oct 1861 to HMS Royal Adelaide, Condition VG. Description: born Kirkeel, Down, 7th July 1841. 5'-41/2'', Pale, blue eyes, brown hair - freckled - Single. Prior service: Ajax, ships no. 351, Boy 2Cl, 16/6/59 - 8/9/59 VG Royal Adelaide, ships no. 281, Boy 2Cl, 9/9/59 - 30/9/59 VG Conflict , ships no. 32 Boy 1Cl, 27/11/59 - 13/12/59 VG Greyhound, ships no. 12 (boys list) 14/12/59 - 30/9/59 Unfortunately his service was too late for the Crimea (1854-56), and none of the ships he served on qualified for any medal during his period of service. Regards Martin |

Hi Martin Thank you SO much for looking up Michaels record for me! I will now be able to pass this information on to his Grandson who asked me to research his ancestors in Ireland. The family lore had it that Michael had served in the Crimea, which I thought was wrong, and you have now confirmed that. He will be thrilled however to have the correct information! Thank you once again! Regards Sheila |
