Hi, My husband's ancestor was stationed in the coast guard of Kent from around 1878 until his retirement sometime before the 1901 census. His name was William Charles Hamilton, a native of Stoke Damerel, Devon. Between 1873-1878 he was stationed in Harwich, Essex. He served on the Penelope, which I believe was in Harwich and then Westgate? According to his naval file, he first served on the Hercules, the Cambridge, and then the Penelope, which took him to Kent. After that, he served on the Woodbridge (?), and then the Hotspur before retiring. In 1881, his family lived in no.7 Coast Guard Station at Westgate on Sea In 1891, they lived at 44 Bishopstone in Herne Bay In 1901, he was retired and living in Herne Bay working as a school caretaker In 1911, he worked as caretaker for the Council School I believe he died near Herne Bay in 1917. If anyone encounters records pertaining to William Charles and/or photographs of any of the ships/coastguard stations/coastguard cottages that he served on or where he & his family (wife Mary) lived, please let me know! Thanks. |
