First of all, thank you for approving my membership and congratulations on providing such a wonderful and comprehensive resource of information on the Coastguards of Yesteryear. I have been busy researching my family history and using the advice provided in your articles I have traced my great grandfather's time as a Royal Navy Coastguard. William Edward Jones was born in Holyhead in Feb 1839. He joined the RN in September 1859 where he served for 9 years until 6 August 1868. His Certificate of Service shows that he transferred to Coastguard duties whilst attached to HMS Royal George. The National Archives records ADM 175/41 shows that he was a boatman stationed at Carrickfergus where he joined from HMS Fisgard. He moved from Carrickfergus to Ballygally on 1st February 1869. He was discharged to HMS Pallas on 31 December 1869. ADM 175/43 shows that his period attached to Pallas was shore based at Ballygally until 20 February 1879. In this period his attached ship changed as follows. Pallas to 30/9/70, Audacious to 5/7/71, Vanguard to 30/9/75, Iron Duke to 16/7/77, Topaze to 1/7/78 and finally Bellisle from 2/7/78. On 21st February 1879 he transferred on promotion to CS Whitehouse as Commanding Boatman. He remained at Whitehouse until 31 May 1880. He then transferred back to Ballygally on 1 June 1880 where he remained until retirement, pensioned to shore on 17 february 1889. During his first stint at Ballygally, in 1872, he married Elizabeth Boyd, the daughter of a retired Coastguard (permanent extra man) named Archibald Boyd. Archibald was based at Crawfordsburn when he joined in 1838. Records show he was removed to Groomsport on 5 April 1854 where he remained until he was discharged on superannuation on 10 February 1858. He retired with his family to live in Glenarm until his death in 1875. I am in need of some advice to further my research on the Boyds and I will raise a separate topic for this. I have the original waxed Certificate of Service for William E Jones and his silver Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He and his family retired back to Holyhead after his retirement.
