Walter James SQUANCE born 9th Feb 1858, Plymouth, Devon, son of John (merchant seaman) & Barbara (formerly LILLICRAP). Walter married Fanny DANKESTER 23 Jun 1882 East Stonehouse, Devon. Had 16 children. Walter died 11 July 1912 in Bangor, Co. Down.
In 1894-1899 he was stationed at Liscannor, living in Enistimon, Co. Clare.
From 1900-1904 he was stationed in Ballyglass, Co. Mayo, as a commissioned boatman.
From 1904-1907 he was chief boatman at Strangford, N.I.
He was transferred to Helen's Bay, Bangor on 2nd July 1907 as Chief Boatman in charge.
In 1910 he was Chief Petty Officer, CG,, and by 1911 was the station officer in Bangor. The 1911 Census, which was taken on April 2nd, lists him as a Chief Petty Officer of the Royal Navy. Retired 17th Feb 1912.
