Martin Cavanagh was my great grandfather I am seeking any information on his service career at or before the turn of the 19th 20th century. two of his sons were in the Royal navy one of them,. Martin Junior was killed in Somaliland in 1902, another was invalided out with poor sight and deafness as he was a gunner the third son was killed in the second battle of the Somme while serving with the Irish Guards |

My advice would be to visit the National Archives Discovery website and do a search of seaman's service records. If your man was in the navy post 1873 there will almost certainly be a record for him and possibly one from pre 1873 (1853 and later). Martin |
