My Gt Grandfather's first of six postings in Ireland was as a Boatman at the Belmullet Station on Claggan Island (Mayo), where four of his five children (inc my grandmother) were born. His wife died while they were stationed at Upper Cove, Kinsale, following which he was transferred to Schull, where he was later appointed Chief Officer in Dec 1910. He left Ireland in Feb 1911 to finish his career as Chief Officer at Fowey, Cornwall.
Nathaniel Attfield was born in 1871 at Rottingdean, Sussex, son of Frederick Attfield (1833-1895) and wife Eliza, née Boyd (c1837-1920). He married Louisa Constable at Steyning, Sussex, in 1894. Nathaniel's father Frederick, who was born at Farnham, Surrey, was coastguard at Crowlink, Sussex (near Beachy head) in the 1870s.
